Fabiano Caruana was born on 30th July 1992 in Miami, Florida (USA), from an Italian-American father and an Italian mother. At the age of 4 he moved with his family to Park Slope, a district of Brooklyn in which also the young Bobby Fischer had lived for some time, and his talent for chess came out one year later thanks to a program of after-school activities of the Congregation Beth Elohim. Fabiano played his first chess tournament at the Polgar Chess Centre in Queens, another borough of New York. Until the age of 12 he lived and played in the USA, with just sporadic participation to European and South-American tournaments. Caruana's first trainer, when he was 6, was national Master Bruce Pandolfini, whose character, in the movie “Searching for Bobby Fischer” (1993), was played by Ben Kingsley. From age 8 to 12 Caruana trained with GM Miron Sher. In 2002, aged 10, he rose to fame among chess enthusiasts by defeating GM Aleksander Wojtkiewicz in New York. In the same year and in the following one Caruana won two consecutive editions of the Pan American Youth Chess Championships. In 2004 Fabiano and his family moved from New York to Madrid, in Spain, to increase his dedication to chess. There Fabiano trained first with IM Boris Zlotni, then and ever since , after moving again to Budapest in 2007, with GM Alexander Chernin. In April 2006 Caruana earned the International Master title, and at his first participation in the Italian Championship (Cremona 2006) he scored an excellent second place at the end of an enthralling Blitz tie-break against GM Michele Godena. In the same year he also won the tournaments in Madrid and Alcalá de Henares. In 2007, lining up three wins out of three attendances (March, April and July) to the “First Saturday” tournaments in Budapest, Fabiano conquered three Grand Master norms in a row, thus qualifying, on 15th July 2007, at the age of 14 years, 11 months and 15 days, for the highest chess title and becoming the youngest GM in both Italian and American history of chess (he even outperformed the legendary Bobby Fischer!), and one of the world youngest. The FIDE ratified the GM title in September 2007, making of Caruana the fifth Italian player ever to reach the maximum chess international title. Few weeks after Caruana celebrated his new GM title by winning the Vlissingen tournament: on the last round he coldly drew an 82-moves game against the former FIDE World Champion GM Rustam Kasimdzhanov, and won the tournament with a performance of 2715 Elo points. On 4th December 2007, in Martinafranca, Fabiano Caruana achieved his first Italian Chess Champion title with an authoritative 9.5 points out of 11 games, a terrific 3 points clear of pursuers IM Sabino Brunello and GM Carlos Garcia Palermo. Caruana's first international consecration among top players was his victory in Group C of the Corus Tournaments in Wijk aan Zee, in January 2008. With a score of 10 points out of 13 games, he outdistanced his closest pursuer by two points. This victory made him the first Italian chess player ever to overcome 2600 Elo points, topping at 2620 Elo points on the 1st April 2008 FIDE Ranking List. In November 2008 Caruana played on first board in the Italian national team at the Chess Olympiad in Dresden, scoring an excellent performance and defeating, among others, the English GM Michael Adams, no. 12 in the FIDE Ranking List. In November 2009 Fabiano would have then been unable to defend his national title (eventually won by GM Lexy Ortega) because of his participation to the World Cup in Khanty-Mansjysk, Siberia, in which he made his way through to the eighth finals, where he was eliminated by the Azerbaijani GM Vugar Gashimov. In January 2009 Caruana, qualified by his victory in previous year's Group C, was admitted to play in the Group B of the Corus Tournaments in Wijk aan Zee (16th FIDE category, average Elo 2641). At the last round Caruana, second to the English GM Nigel Short, was to play right against the tournament leader. After almost 6 hours of play and 67 moves, Caruana managed to win game and tournament scoring 8.5/13 and a performance of 2751 Elo points. In the history of the prestigious Corus Tournaments, Caruana shines as the sole player capable of winning Group C and Group B tournaments in two consecutive years. This victory granted him the right to play in the main Group A tournament on the following year, in January 2010. In April 2009 Caruana then played in the 16th Russian Team Championship in Sochi, closing in second place with the Muscovite team “Club 64” and scoring 5 points out of 6 games (+5, -1) with an Elo performance of 2896 points. In May, in Slovenia, he played in the Mitropa Cup with the Italian national team, scoring 6 points out of 8 games and receiving the gold medal on 1st board with a performance of 2729 Elo points: he was instrumental to the the Italian team's 2nd place (but just by tie-break!) after the Croatian team. Fabiano then played with the “Linex Magic” team in the Spanish Team Championship, winning also this championship. In January 2010 Fabiano played in the Group A of the Corus Tournaments, that lined up almost all world's strongest chess players in a stellar tournament of 19th FIDE category. Fabiano performed very well, closing undefeated the matches against FIDE Ranking List's no. 1 (GM Carlsen), no. 3 (GM Anand) and no. 4 (GM Kramnik), actually with big regrets for missing by a narrow margin the win against the Norwegian GM Carlsen, winner of the tournament. After winning the 17th Russian Team Championship in Dagomys with the team “ShSM-64” and, in April, the German Team Championship with the team “OGS-Baden”, Fabiano in May won his first Italian Team Championship in Arvier with the team “Obiettivo Risarcimento Padova.
